Nottinghamshire Dormouse Group

Protecting our hazel dormice

We are a volunteer group working to monitor, protect and celebrate one of Britain’s most enchanting and threatened mammals — the hazel dormouse — across Nottinghamshire’s woodlands and hedgerows.

Our mission

Small, sleepy and slipping away

The hazel dormouse has vanished from much of the countryside it once called home, declining by more than half in a generation as ancient woodland and hedgerows are lost. We work alongside landowners, conservationists and local volunteers to monitor dormouse populations, restore the habitats they depend on, and help people across Nottinghamshire fall in love with this gentle, golden creature.

Our woodlands

Through briar & bramble

From ancient woodland to winding hedgerows, Britain’s wooded landscapes are among our richest habitats. Home to countless birds, insects and mammals, they provide the food, shelter and connected pathways that hazel dormice need to survive and thrive.

Support our work
